What is Graywater?

Also known as gray water, grey water, or greywater, it is lightly used water from your home. It comes from your laundry, shower, bathtub and sinks.

Gray Water vs Blackwater

Black water comes from your toilet. Some jurisdictions also classify water from the kitchen sink and dishwasher as black water, because of the higher concentration of suspended solids.

Gray Water vs Recycled Water

Recycled water has been sent back through multiple levels of additional treatment. Greywater comes straight from your drains.

How to Use Graywater

With proper handling, greywater can be reused around your house to irrigate your landscape, water your food garden, and in some cases even flush your toilets and wash your laundry.

Greywater is a booming frontier in drought resilience, ecological sustainability and regenerative living.

A Pattern Language

The world of graywater can seem confusing at first. Everyone talks about biodegradable, eco-friendly, natural, organic – there’s no shortage of buzzwords. How am I supposed to know which soaps to use?

And what kind of greywater system do I need? How do I build it? Which of the hundreds of YouTube videos do I need to watch, and which should I believe?

What about the legal issues??

Fortunately, when you’re working with greywater, you’re working with nature instead of against it. And just like in nature, while every specific location and situation is unique and different, there are nevertheless underlying patterns that you can discern.

Greywater Central clarifies those patterns in three distinct areas: How to Build a Greywater System, Essential Soaps for Graywater, and Legal Guidelines for Graywater.

You’ll be learning to speak a Pattern Language, empowering you to thrive in any situation, anywhere.
